What Do You Get With Cheap Prepaid Cell Phones?
Hoping to encourage my daughter in her quest for independence, I signed her up for a prepaid cell phone service just last year. I was looking for cheap prepaid cell phones.
Just walking around the mall in our town, comparison shopping for cheap prepaid cell phones was an eye opening experience.
I learned, for one thing, that (at least in our town), a 'free' prepaid cell phone is a nonstarter. My daughter's phone cost over a hundred dollars! But the advantage in this situation is that she did not have to sign a contract for 2-3 years.
She also chose a very, very basic cell phone on her prepaid plan, without the popular camera feature. This phone also does not feature Internet capability, which suits my daughter - she knows she can get that at home for nothing.Packages range in price from zero to infinity, it seems. The numbers are bewildering; so I decided to do some serious investigation. The easiest method by far was checking on the Internet. All I wanted was what I call the 'tin can and a string' package - basic cell phone service that I could afford. She wanted text messaging. We were fortunate that we found a prepaid cell phone that offered both these things! Prices do range quite a bit, so comparison shopping is a very good idea. Most companies impose limits on the number of days your prepaid minutes are good for - ours go away after 45 days, so if we get $100 worth of minutes, we have to use them within a 45 day period. With a prepaid cell phone, you can call locally or you can call long distance - it's pretty much the same regardless of where you are calling. Some companies charge more per minute and still others seem to regard long distance as an opportunity to greatly increase their profit margin. The company we wound up going with was about in the middle as far as their prepaid rates went - about twenty-one cents per minute. If you are like my daughter, and text messaging is an important feature to you, then look for a company that offers free text messaging; some charge at least 5 cents per text message and that can wind up costing you a bundle! So to answer the question: What do you get with cheap prepaid cell phones? You get as much service as you can afford.
